Named American but not coming from America

Many dishes were named by following their birthplaces. But it’s not exactly always like that, especially in Thailand. This post, I would like to talk about one of famous confused dish names that people always have a mistake its birthplace.

It is AMERICAN fried rice.

Even if its name has AMERICAN there, but it was first cooked in Thailand or I can say its origin is in Thailand.

And How did it become AMERICAN fried rice?

First of all, I have to thank you Lady Surapee Maneewat that she gave an interview about the origin of this dish in Sakhul Thai Magazine.

From her story, I can conclude that this dish was occurred because of a flight canceling.

This real birthplace of this dish was in the cuisine of Thailand airport restaurant named “Ratchathanee Restaurant”. There was a customer had made orders a lot of “American breakfast” for the flight

but unfortunately the flight was canceled that made those food were abandoned.

Lady Surapee, at that time she still be Miss Surapee, felt upset to waste the food, so she cooked fried rice with ketchup and a few ingredients that she could find and put them together with sunrise eggs, sausages and whatever were left from the abandoned breakfast meals and then she put them in front of the restaurant showcase.

A Thai air force man came and found the dish and ordered it. Then, an American air force man saw it and asked the dish’s name. She answered him, “It is American fried rice.”

The Air force Chief of Thailand at that time was heard and he felt the name is very good and praised it to other people.

And, that was how this dish became popular.

At first, American fried rice didn’t have fixed combinations. It’s still up to what were rested in the kitchen but nowadays American Fried Rice always serves with a sunrise egg, ham or sausage and fried chicken on the same plate. That’s every children love it much. Some restaurants try to decorate American flag on the top of the rice to make it look interesting.

From a mistake American flied flight to be delicious American fried rice, it sounds interesting to me. And even if this dish was a real made-in-Thailand dish, I still would love it named American because this is prove of relationship between our countries.
